Use this company with caution.

We developed a problem with leaking coolant which was diagnosed by VW as a faulty EGR valve. Motor Service Bilsenter AS was the only garage that could fit us in quickly during the holiday period. When we picked up the van we were told that the work had taken a full day’s labour and we paid the total sum.

An hour after leaving the workshop we checked the coolant level and it was well below minimum. Later that evening we also realised that the company had likely lied about the number of hours labour because our solar panel data showed the van had only been in the workshop for a few hours.

We returned to the workshop the following day. We were told that there must have been air in the system that they hadn’t extracted and this was why the coolant was so low. We were repeatedly told that the number of hours recorded for the work was correct by Elena Ringheim (director of the company). However, when we evidenced how we knew that the hours we had been invoiced was much more than the hours actually worked and said that we were considering calling the police, Stein Ringheim (Elena Ringheim's husband and business partner) said that there had been an “administrative error” in the number of hours recorded and a refund of £489.87 was provided. Avoid if you have a choice!

I am sure that it was deliberate fraud rather than an administrative error for the following reasons:

1. When I called on Tuesday evening, the day before collecting the van, I was told that a lot of work had already been undertaken and reasons were given for why the job was difficult and would need to be continued the following day. In fact, as they later admitted, and the solar panel data demonstrated, the van had been outside all day and work did not start until the Wednesday.

2. Elena and her colleague vigorously maintained the lies about the van being in the workshop for half a day on the Tuesday until I said I could prove that the van had been outside.

2. When I first mentioned that I knew the van had been outside, Eleana instantly responded that a GPS device was not that accurate, suggesting that she had thought through how her lies could be caught out and had decided that a GPS device's data wasn't conclusive and could be explained away.

3. Elena later attempted to justify the extra hours falsely invoiced by stating that her colleague had carried out extra work locating the parts.

3. Elena responded aggressively when I tried to speak to the mechanic regarding when he had carried out the work, and her refusal to allow me to speak to him on that topic shows that she knew full well that he had not been working on the van on the Tuesday.

4. The fact that Stein Ringheim admitted that the hours charged were false when I made it clear that I was going to call the police.

We were really lucky that we had the solar panel data otherwise we would never have been aware that they had ripped us off by hundreds of pounds. I very much doubt we are the first people that they have done this to, but I hope by writing this detailed review it makes it harder for them to do it to others in the future. If you do use this company, I'd advise getting a quote from several other companies first and if Motor Service Bilsenter AS's quote is significantly more, question why.

In general our trip to Norway was brilliant and we met wonderful people, but this was a really sad end to the trip. Feel free to see the other reviews that I have left on google in the past - I am not someone who would leave a review like this without good reason.

I cannot recommend this place more. The mechanic helped us out 5 minutes before closing, she was at all times smiling, welcoming and understanding. She made sure that all of our tires were at the correct stand and even help us out resetting the electronic system so that the notification about the tire pressure disappeared. Knowledgeable, patient and simply the best 💓
